Morning all

Hope you are well and had a good holiday – can you believe we are doing this again!

Firstly a quick reminder that you can e-mail me at any point during the day

yearsix@lingsprimary.org.uk

I hope you all have the link for the Zoom register, if not e-mail me and I will get one sent over. On that we will go through today’s tasks and expectations.

Warm up activity (can be completed before the register if you are keen and ready to get started!)

Times tables

English

This half term, we are starting our Shakespeare topic

Challenge:

How many Shakespeare plays can you name? Send them to me by e-mail and I will announce the winner during tomorrow’s assembly!

The play that we will be focusing on is:

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Note down some ideas from these questions.

What does this title make you think of?

Have you heard of this play before?

What can you remember about it?

The first part of the play is set in Athens.

What do you know about Athens?

Here is a picture of  Athens:

Answer these questions about the picture in full sentences:

What can you see?

What do you think it would smell like? Why?

Does it look like a modern city or an ancient city? Why?

What would the atmosphere be like? Busy, quiet, calm etc. Why?

Would you like to visit here? Why?

Finally, research the following questions about Athens.

Which country is Athens in?

Which continent is Athens in?

Which language is spoken in Athens?

What is the population of Athens?

Describe a tradition or festival from Athens.

Describe a national food or drink from Athens.

Maths:

Starter challenge:

Before Christmas, we talked about the fact that in some math’s questions it is important to find different possibilities as there many not be one answer available at least not straight away. Remember when we played Ice Breakers?

?? x ? = ???

We are going to complete some work over the next few weeks on different possibilities so to begin with I have the following challenge for you.

Lolla bought a balloon at the circus. She gave the clown six coins to pay for it.

What could Lolla have paid for the balloon?

Which of your answers seems a reasonable amount to pay for a balloon? Why?

Rules:

  • coins used have to be actual coins (she can not pay with a 3p because they don’t exist)
  • you can use the same coins more than once
  • this task is about finding possibilities so don’t settle for your first answer.

Main task:

This week, we will be revising our methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and then extending our skills.

Today, we will focus on addition and subtraction of whole numbers and decimals.

Try these first (using a written strategy if necessary)

  1. 674,231 + 7,124,890 =
  2. 54.907 + 0.142 =
  3. 693,241 – 236,145 =
  4. 587,124 – 65,149 =
  5. 65.321 – 20.154 =
  6. 11 – 2.9 =

Send me your answers to these questions please so I can check for errors. If you are stuck on any of these, e-mail me and I will help you before you move on.

If you were happy with those questions (and you have e-mailed me/blogged the answers), move on to these:

Maths

Send the completed sheet over to me to mark before trying this missing number challenges.

Look at this example first:

Maths challenge

Again, send me your answers or e-mail me if you get stuck.

Spelling Game:

Spend some time playing at least one of the spelling games at the following site:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/search.aspx?q=spelling

You could also use this time to practice some of your spellings. If you don’t have a copy of your sheet at home, let me know and I will e-mail you one over.

RE

We are starting a new RE topic called:

Christianity: The Old Testament –  Freedom

What do you think our topic will be about?

Today’s question is:

What was life like for Hebrew slaves in Egypt 3,000 years ago?

What do you already know about Egypt?

Do you know who the Hebrew people were?

What do you know about slavery?

Hebrew refers to people who following the Jewish religion (Judaism). What do you know about this religion?

We are going to look at the story of Moses and how this links to Christianity and freedom.

Here are some themes that we will come across in the story:

salvation– saving someone.

freedom– the right to go where you like or do what you like.

suffering – to feel pain or misery.

vulnerability – able to be harmed or attacked easily.

obedience – doing what you are told to do.

sin – an unkind act that breaks a religious or moral law.

evil – things which are cruel or wrong.

Here is the vocabulary that you will need to know today:

Slave – someone who is owned by another person and must work for them without being paid (enslavement)

Old Testament – the first part of the Christian holy book, the Bible, believed to be the word of God.

Hebrew – the language of the ancient Jews, with a modern form used in Israel.

Pharaoh – a ruler in Ancient Egypt.

Read this explanation:

Many Hebrew people were living in Egypt because of its fruitful soils, so they did not starve. The Pharaoh was worried about the expansion of the Hebrews growing into a large and powerful nation who might join forces with Egypt’s enemies and take over the country, so he made them his slaves and took away their freedom. The Hebrews were needed by the Pharaoh to build his pyramids and they worked hard in the heat in terrible conditions. They worked hard all the time but did not get paid. They could not rest when they wanted to, or do what they wanted to, and they were beaten by their masters.

Watch this clip:

Running alongside this, the Pharaoh heard someone predict that a Hebrew boy would be born who would free all his slaves. So, he ordered all new-born Hebrew baby boys to be killed! One Hebrew mother, Yocheved (also called Jochebed in Ancient Hebrew), tried to save her baby, Moses, from death. This family were part of the Levi tribe. Levi was a descendent of Jacob.

Read the text from Exodus 2:1 – 10  below:

The Birth of Moses.

Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman,  and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months.  But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.  His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”

“Yes, go,” she answered. So, the girl went and got the baby’s mother. Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So, the woman took the baby and nursed him.  When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.”

Now reflect on what you have learnt and answer these questions:

Do you think it is right to deny someone their freedom?

Is it ever right to keep people as slaves?

What theme do you think is shown through the first part of Moses’ life?

Used evidence from the text and video clip to support your answers.

Extra challenge

I have set up a TT Rockstars tournament to run throughout this week.

E-mail me if you need me to send you your log in details,

I hope you have had a good day and I look forward to seeing your work.

See you on Zoom tomorrow morning!

I see the very hot dresser sun make the town look orange also I see very small houses and then a bigger one right in the centre. I think it will smell like sand because its one of those places that looks hot and sweaty like a desert. It looks like an modern place for a very poor town but for now it looks ancient. I think it would be busy around the big houses but very calm and quiet around the little bits like a barn. I would if I could have a bigger house and it will have to be clean because it looks a bit dirty also loads of little bugs bitting my body.

What I know about Egypt is its quite big and very hot most of the time. Most people think Egypt is desserts because on what they see on TV and in books about the pyramids but it also is where people live. I didn’t know who the Hebrew people were until now. Slavery was very common for British people but it was also done because of people’s race, skin colour, beliefs, religion but that’s not the only reason people did it in general because they were rich and mean but people were slaves for clothes and the tinyist amount of money. They also had very bad people who made people be their slaves, the slaves mostly didn’t want to do it but they would’ve been threatened to be killed if they rann away or refused to help!! (stop slavery!!!!) 🙁

I think the Athens Is a very hot place and very crowded. The place reminds me that it is very similar to a dessert. I know that the Athens is we’re people fell in love but also got killed. I also know that all the people in the play live there and their is very weird animals like a person with a body of a horse but the head of a human 😂😂😂

No its horrible to deny some ones freedom because your kind of saying (your my slave) which isn’t very nice and is hurt full .No because will they ever make friends and spend time happily . This all happened when he was just a baby and the reason why all of that happened is because the Pharaoh had been given some news that a Hebrew baby will be the Prince of Eygipt so Pharaoh decide to kill all the Hebrew babies but they didn’t get Moses.

RE.I think that you shouldn’t take peoples freedom away because they deserve to live a life like any other person in Egypt and need to be well treated. I also think that you should never keep anyone as slaves because they might not work for the evil tribe and your puting lives at risk.I didn’t like how they hit the Herbrew’s with ropes if they did something that they didn’t like and they killed every baby boy that was born.

      Well done Danielius.

For question 6, you need to think about the place value. Because the second number has a decimal point, you need to add one to 11 so it would be:
      11 – 2.9
