Real Leaders Training- Week 4
This weeks Real Leaders training was all about practical application of the theory learnt in the first three sessions. The leaders had the opportunity to review and evaluate what they have learnt in the last three sessions and then were required to demonstrate these new skills in the skill application.
Activity 1- Session 1, 2 and 3 Review
In this activity we spoke about each session and what the leaders have learnt over these lessons. The main focus of this review was to discuss the different forms of communication we discussed last week and which forms we are more comfortable using and why. The three forms of communication are:
- Dance: The physical actions we use when we are leading including hand gestures, body language and facial expressions
- Music: This is how we use or change our voice to communicate which includes volume and tone
- Words: This is the physical words we use when we lead which includes explanations, praise, feedback or compliments.
Activity 2: A chance to lead
In this activity Mr Davies introduced a game to the group which the leaders had to play. Then one at a time one leader was picked to stop the game and introduce a new element to the game. This activity tested the leaders ability to stop a highly energetic situation using various forms of communication as well as testing their ability to adapt & adjust on the spot.
Positives:
- Most used music effectively, changing their volume and tone of voice well to match the situation
- All leaders demonstrated an ability to adapt and adjust the game well on the spot
Areas to improve:
- All leaders stuck to using music as their main form of communication and need to begin to demonstrate dance and words more often
- Leaders need to start to use demonstrations to support their explanations
- Most leaders showed they were nervous, so they need to learn how to show confidence even when they are nervous
Review Questions
- How did you feel when you were first chosen to introduce a new element to the game?
- How did you feel while you were giving your explanation and leading your section of the game?
- How did you feel after you had finished your leading opportunity?
- Considering your experiences when stopping and starting a new game what leadership skills do you need to work on and why?
