Real Leaders Training- Week 1

This was the first week of the Real Leaders training where our newest 15 Year 5 young leaders began to work through session one. During the session the leaders had a number of different activities which all focused on the skills and qualities of a leader.

Activity 1- Question Carrousel

This activity required the leaders to find a partner and discuss different questions posed by Mr Davies and Mrs Davies. The questions the children had to discuss were:

  • Can you think of some examples of good leaders? (parents, teachers, siblings, celebrities etc)
  • What skills and qualities do these good leaders have?
  • Do you have any of these qualities?

There was some fantastic examples of good leaders given like: Mr Wolmarans, Mr Davies, Mrs Davies, Parents and Marcus Rashford. There was a number of great skills and qualities named by all leaders with some of the reoccurring skills and qualities being: good communication skills, motivational skills, organised, passionate and inspirational.

Activity 2- Pyramid of Leadership Skills

After discussing the skills and quality cards from the Create Development Real Leaders programme the leaders were then split into three groups and their task was to select six skills which they as a group felt were the most important skills. They were then tasked with creating a pyramid with the most important of these skills at the top. Each groups pyramid was completely different and was great to hear the leaders thinking behind their selections.

  • Confidence: ‘This is the most important as if you don’t have confidence you will struggle communicate and you might doubt yourself when you are planning and organising’
  • Communication: ‘This is the most important because you need to be able to explain to people. If you have a really good plan or really good game and you can’t communicate then you will find it difficult to lead.
  • Organised: ‘This is the most important skill as you need to be able to plan and prepare what you will say and do so you can then explain this well and have an easier time leading’

Activity 3- Shape Up

It was now time for the leaders to demonstrate some of these leadership skills and qualities through the Create Development game ‘Shape Up.’ Every person in the group had to come up with a static balance and teach it to the rest of the group to form a routine. To add an extra challenge the groups had to perform two shapes in cannon and two shapes in unison, while incorporating some form of movement between shapes. The rest was up to the leaders and it was interesting to see some of the good communication, organisation and negotiation skills that occurred during their group discussions. Some of the results were amazing.

Activity 4- Roles on the Bus Review

The final activity for the session was the Roles on the Bus review. Mr Davies and Mrs Davies started by talking about the different roles you can take as a leader, linking these to section of a bus. For example: Wheels, this is someone who just kept going all session no matter what. Some of the discussions that took place were great and the leaders some real maturity when they discussed their role in the group and why is was important to have many different roles.

Review Questions

  • Can you tell us one of your examples of a good leader and three skills and qualities they have that make them a good leader.

My 1st best leader is my mum because she gets me in the mood to be active and positive if I’m bored.
My 2nd best leader is my grandad because he tells me to exercise any time of the day to keep my mind fresh and energetic.
My 3rd best leaders is Mr Bushell because when I do my times tables he always supports me.

For me a good leader means when they are confident and they are a good listener. I think that would be my mum because she listens and gives me good ideas to improve and tells me I can do it making me feel confident.
