Reception’s Learning week commencing 19th October

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been another busy week in Reception! We have been talking about how we are all the same in some ways and different in others. We read a book called ‘The Colours of Us’ which celebrates all the different skin colours we have. Every child has done a self portrait thinking carefully about the colour of their skin. These are fantastic pieces of work and we have made two displays – as you can’t come into school to see them, here they are!

Nightingales –

Hargreaves –

Not only did we finish our portraits, but we have learned the traditional story of the Little Red Hen, learned about how bread is made, and then made some ourselves! Why not challenge your child and ask them if they can tell you the story of The Little Red Hen? Better still – if they can and you add a video on Tapestry there may be a little prize for them!

It has been fantastic to see on Tapestry that some of the children are taking their learning home. Some children have been showing their grown ups different ways they can make 5, and some have been working hard on writing their names. A big well done to those children!

Next week it is half term, during the holiday it would really benefit the children if you could practise writing their names with them. They were all sent a wipeable name card to do this. If you would like some more handwriting paper with lines – please let us know! In addition to this please practise the Rocket Words with your child (they are stapled into the front of the yellow reading records), now that the children are learning to blend sounds to read words it is essential that they learn these words as they cannot be sounded out. When they begin to read books but don’t know Rocket Words it makes it very difficult for the children to read sentences, e.g. in the sentence “I go into the big pit.” the children would only be able to sound out the words big and pit.

If the children are missing us here is a link to our YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDitR9NPueFZYLJ2ngSCfCA  where you can find videos of us reading some favourite stories as well as the videos about picking up a pencil and support to help your child with reading and writing.

The children return to school on Tuesday 3rd November, as it is a Tuesday please send your child in their PE kit. We wish you all a restful holiday and look forward to seeing you soon,

Kind regards

The Reception Team
