Maths: Rounding – the ultimate challenge!
Right Year 5, we’ll be very impressed if anyone can solve this.
When a number is rounded to the nearest 100,000 it is 300,000.
When it is rounded to the nearest 10,000 it is 340,000.
What could the number be?
Don’t forget – there may be more than one answer.
Good luck!
It could be 341,000 and 342,000 and 343,000 and 344,000
Done that is all I would think of
Well investigated Mia.
Is 344,000 the highest number that it could be?

Well investigated Amelia.
Think about the place value of the numbers involved. How many digits do they have?
335,000
337,000
340,856
343,009
More than 9,900 ways.
Well investigated Hargun. Did you not fancy writing down all 9,900 ways?
How do you know there are 9,900? What is the lowest and highest possibility?
. the first one no because if it is 100,000 and it is 4 and bellow it would round to 100,000. But if it is 5 and more it would round to 200,000 so it would not round to 300,000.
Hello Brooke
You are looking for a number that rounds to 300,000 when rounded to the nearest hundred thousand and 340,000 when rounded to the nearest ten thousand.
Does that help?
339,000
