Thursday 2nd July – Year 5

Good morning Year 5 – I hope you are all well.

Here are your tasks for today:

SPaG

We have looked at modal verbs this year but we will revise them today. Can you remember what they are?

Here is a reminder – there is an activity and a quiz to complete too!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zwwp8mn/articles/zps4pbk

Now try this:

English

I’d like you to choose a religion  – Christian, Hindi, Islam, Sikh, Judaism, Buddhism or any other that interests you. It must not be your own religion.

I’d like you to research the festivals and celebrations within that religion and create a factfile including all the interesting facts that you have found. Think about the following points:

  • When does the festival/celebration take place? Why does it take place then?
  • What happens during the festival?
  • Is a particular type of food eaten and why?
  • What do people do during the festival/celebration? – what types of activities. Why are they important?
  • Are certain celebrations for children only or are they for all ages?
  • Where are  the celebrations usually held?
  • What is the history of the festival/celebration?

Pictures and diagrams may help to explain in more detail what you are writing about.

Maths

Warm-up

We have been looking at time this week. Have a go a the following word problems involving time. Remember all that you learnt during the lessons on Monday and Tuesday as this will help you today.

timeprobs

Art

We looked at the Hindu celebration of Diwali on Tuesday. Today we are going to look at the artform of Rangoli which is usually made during Diwali and other festivals. Patterns are often created on the ground near the entrance to a house to welcome guests  and usually use materials such as coloured rice, dry flour, coloured sand or flower petals.

Here is a Rangoli design being created:

I’d like you to create your own Rangoli design and colour it. You can use whatever media you would like – coloured pencils, paints etc. Google has lots of images if you are struggling to be creative and need some ideas.

Extra Challenge – In Maths, Rangoli patterns are a creative way to discover symmetry, reflection and tessellation. We have recently looked at symmetry and reflection in our Maths lessons. Can you make your Rangoli design symmetrical? Can you ensure that colour is used in a symmetrical way?

Have fun today. Take care.

    Pasha must complete her homework.
He was so tired, he couldn’t keep his eyes open. Tom is a great footballer,he may even play in goal.If she keeps working hard, she will just get a chance. He is still learning,he cant do his shoe laces just yet. You shouldnt hurt people or steal things.when you have finished you would leave your table. It has been ordered so when they get here, they might find it waiting for them.the bitter cold makes it certain there should be icy roads tomorrow. I would swap places with a millionaire.

      Hi Declan,

Great effort – just double check that you have used a modal verb in each space. Check c) d) e).

    English:
    I choose Judaism
    Description
Judaism is an ethnic religion comprising the collective religious, cultural and legal tradition and civilization of the Jewish people. Judaism is considered by religious Jews to be the expression of the covenant that God established with the Children of Israel.
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated for eight days and nights. Hanukkah customs include eating foods fried in oil like potato pancakes and doughnuts; playing with a spinning top on which are inscribed the Hebrew letters as a reminder of a great miracle; and the giving gifts of money to children.
Another Jewish celebration is Passover which is the celebration of the Exodus, when God intervened to free the Jews from slavery in Egypt. Jews observe the holiday through the Seder. The Seder is a large family meal, like Christmas dinner, that goes in a particular order. The order includes various prayers, songs, and other bits that tell the story of the Exodus. Another big thing is the story of Passover says that when the Jews left Egypt, they left in a hurry, and did not have time to allow their bread to rise. So Jews do not eat some bread-like things during the holiday.
