Year 4 Maths task – Wednesday 3rd June

Hello year 4!

Today we are going to be learning how to find fractions of amounts. Below there is a help sheet to guide you through how to do it. Complete your working out in pictures the same style as mine and comment your answers please.

Finding fractions of amounts

Questions:

Remember, the denominator (bottom number) is how many groups you need in your shape so 1/3 would need 3 groups, 1/5 would need 5 groups and so on. The numerator is how many sections you are looking at so 2/4 you would look at 2 parts, 4/6 you would look at 4 parts.

  1. 3/4 of 20
  2. 2/4 of 28
  3. 2/3 of 18
  4. 3/5 of 15
  5. 3/6 of 30
  6. 3/4 of 36
  7. 2/4 of 12
  8. 2/3 of 30
  9. 2/6 of 42

      Hi Kristers,
Don’t panic! Have a look at the link or picture which is on the blog post. That will run through how to do it.

The first question is 3/4 of 20.
The bottom number (denominator) tells us how many parts to divide by.
The top number (numerator) tells us how many parts we are looking at.

We know we need to divide by 4 because it is 3/4– Draw yourself a rectangle with 4 boxes. Divide 20 into the 4 boxes.

Now you need to look at 3 of those parts and count how many you have because the fraction is 3/4.

      Does this help?
