Friday 22nd May- year 5

Buenas dias!  Esto Viernes!

Good day!  It’s Friday.

And today is the last day of school before the holidays.  So there won’t be any work posted next week, but Mrs Millard and I will be back on Monday 1st June.

We thought we might do a theme for each week after half term, with a different topic,  if you have any suggestions for a topic you might like to study then let us know and we’ll see what we can do.

English

Earlier in the week we practised using inverted commas for speech.   Remembering to start a new line for a new speaker, and put the inverted comma at the beginning and end of the speech. But just using speech can be a bit boring…

“How are you?” asked John.

“I’m okay,” replied Chloe.

“I’m not!” screeched Sam.

This time I’m challenging you to add some description to each piece of speech.  What is the speaker doing?  How do they look?  How do they sound?  etc.  Like this…

John peered at the two girls, who stood sopping wet and shivering on the deck of the ship. “How are you?” .

“I’m okay,” replied Chloe bravely, although her voice shook a little as she spoke. .

“I’m not!” screeched Sam with a stamp of her feet and a toss of her dripping hair which flicked water all over the deck .

Your turn!!!!

Maths

Here’s a problem involving both area and perimeter.  Remember perimeter is a 1d measurement- the length around a shape, and area is a 2d measurement of the space taken up by a flat shape.

Spanish

Watch the video and see if you can say when your birthday is in Spanish.

      Good try Evie,
you need to have a look at the perimeter. What is the perimeter of the first square going to be? How long is each side? Now you need to half it…

      The biggest square is 100cm^2
The little square has to be half the size
So the size has to be 50cm^2

Not quite. Have a look at the perimeters. What is the perimeter of the first square? So if you half that then what must the perimeter of the second square be?

”Today the weather is beautiful! ” said Mom while washing the dishes.
”Yes it is.” said Dad as he watched TV
The children said happily” Can we go in the garden.”
Then Mum said” Of course you can.”

Good try Dhanshri. Have a look at the perimeters, you need to work out the perimeter of the large square and then half it. Then you can start to find the area of the small square.
