Year 3 – Monday 27th April

Welcome back!

We hope you had a lovely weekend and got the chance to enjoy the lovely sunshine we have been having.

We will be updating the block with English, Maths and wider curriculum tasks every day at 9am.

If you didn’t finish all of the work in your learning packs which we sent home then feel free to continue with these.

Don’t forget, we don’t expect you to be doing school work all day, every day!

It’s important to take regular breaks, get outside and stay healthy (especially if the sunshine continues).

If you can’t get outside, Joe Wicks is still doing his Youtube P.E. lessons on his Youtube channel every morning at 9am.

Find them here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ

We look forward to seeing your responses throughout the week.

Mrs Beckwith, Miss Lindop, Miss Barden and Miss Willmer.

Here are today’s tasks:

Reading:

Read the short story. Then answer each question below.

The Blind Men and the Elephant

Six blind men who stood by the roadside every day and asked for money from the people who passed. They had often heard of elephants, but they had never seen one. How could they? They were blind.

It so happened one morning that an elephant was driven down the road where they stood. When they were told that the great beast was before them, they asked the driver to let him stop so that they might see him.

Of course, they could not see him with their eyes, but they thought that by touching him they could learn just what kind of animal he was.

The first one happened to put his hand on the elephant’s side. “Well, well!” he said, “Now I know all about this beast. He is exactly like a wall.”

The second felt only of the elephant’s tusk. “My brother,” he said, “You are mistaken. He is not at all like a wall. He is round and smooth and sharp. He is more like a spear than anything else.”

The third happened to take hold of the elephant’s trunk. “Both of you are wrong,” he said. “Anybody who knows anything can see that this elephant is like a snake.”

The fourth reached out his arms and grasped one of the elephant’s legs. “Oh, how blind you are,” he said. “It is very plain to me that he is round and tall like a tree.”

The fifth was a very tall man, and he chanced to take hold of the elephant’s ear. “The blindest man ought to know that this beast is not like any of the things that you name,” he said. “He is exactly like a huge fan.”

It took the sixth blind man some time before he could find the elephant at all. At last, he seized the animal’s tail. “Oh foolish fellows,” he cried, “you surely have lost your senses. This elephant is not like a wall, a spear, a snake, or a tree, nor is he like a fan. But any man with any sense can see that he is exactly like a rope.”

Then the elephant moved on, and the six blind men sat by the roadside all day and quarrelled about him. Each believed that he knew just how the animal looked, and each called the others unkind names because they did not agree with each other.

People who have eyes sometimes act as foolishly.

Questions:

  1. Why were the blind men on the roadside?
  2. What does the elephant’s ear feel like to one of the men?
  3. How do the blind men treat one another?
  4. Find another word for argued in the text.
  5. Why does the sixth man think the elephant is like a rope? (Think about the parts of an elephant)
  6. What does ‘foolish’ mean?
  7. What is the message of this short story?

Maths:

In Maths this week, we are going to be beginning to understand fractions.

You will have a video to watch and then a worksheet to complete every day.

Watch today’s video:

Today’s worksheet:

Maths Lesson 1

Maths Challenge:

RE:

Jesus often told special stories called parables. The parables helped people to understand what Jesus was teaching. One of his most famous parables is about two men who wanted to build a house. Read the parable and then think about the questions below:

Questions:

  1. What do you think Jesus was trying to teach people through this parable?
  2. What do you think are the good things that we should have as the foundations in our lives?
  3. Are you good at listening to and following wise advice?

Once you’ve finished thinking about and discussing these questions, have a listen to a hymn that Christians sing about this parable.

Computing:

Finished all of that? Want something else to

do?

Daily Riddle:

This week we are going to be posting a riddle a day. The answers will be revealed the next day so you need to check each day to see if you got it right. Involve everybody you can and see who is correct!

Here is today’s riddle:

A man rode into town on Friday.
He stays in town for three days.
He leaves on Friday.
How did he do it?

Hit the button:

We play this game in class all of the time, see how many of your times tables facts you can get right in 1 minute. Remember, in Year 3 you should know your 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables.

Toy Shop:

Last week you learned about money in Maths. Test your knowledge of money with this game.

Story time:

Want to do some reading but have read all of your books at home?

No problem! Listening to a story is just as good as reading one.
