Friday 24th April- year 5

Good morning! Great work yesterday everyone.

English

Today it’s time for a little bit of writing.   We’re going to write a non-chronological text over the next few days.   You’ve done this in year 4 for turtles, and in year 5 for space.  So you know we need an introduction to start,  which tells our reader a little bit about the subject-  but not too much.   Just a few sentences to get them started.  Remember this is just our “salad” starter dish! Don’t forget you can use rhetorical questions to involve the reader and adjectives and superlatives to make it interesting. We’re going to write about Ancient Greece, as we continue to discover more.   Here’s mine.

Around 3,000 years ago, Ancient Greece was the most important place on Earth.  It was the centre of Science, Maths, athletics, architecture, politics and trade for the whole world.  But did you know that Ancient Greece was not actually one country?  It was made  up of a group of smaller countries and islands each ruled by their own King, and Athens was the main country.

Now you have a go.

Maths

Yesterday we looked at length.  Today let’s look at weight and mass.  Remember mass is how much “stuff” there is in something- that does not change, so if we measured the mass of an apple on Earth or the moon it would not change and is measured in Newtons (N).  Weight is changed by gravity.  So the apple would weigh less on the moon because there is less gravity there, pulling the apple down.  Weight is measured in grams and kilograms (g / Kg)

Now try these

Of course the best way to get grips with weights is to use them!  Over the next week I challenge you to do some baking- cakes, cookies, whatever you fancy.

Send me some pictures!

Spanish

Try this online Spanish lesson

There’s a quiz and a teacher who speaks both Spanish and English on the video.    Let me know what you think.

Creative

Who’s been putting rainbows in their windows?   Who’s been practising a new hobby?  Send me some videos and pictures of your hobbies!   Here’s my cross stitch now… can you tell what it is yet?

Have a great weekend!

Ancient Greece was founded in the 8th century BC, and finished in the 6th century. Ancient Greece was immensely influential in language, politics, education, philosophy, science and the arts.

Great work, how about a rhetorical question to draw your reader in, make them want to read more?

About 2,500 years ago Greece was the most critical place in the ancient world. The Greeks were good at most things including great thinkers, warriors, writers, actors, athletes, artists, architects and politicians. People have been living in Greece for over 40,000 years. The earliest settlers mostly had boring jobs and lived in very simple things like a hunter-gatherer or farming lifestyles.

Lots of great facts Lydia… now how about a rhetorical question to hook your reader and make them want to continue reading?
