Tuesday 24th March – Year 5

Hello again Pankhurst Class – Day 2!

Here are your activities for today:

  1. English – Do you agree with what the government are doing at the moment regarding the Coronovirus outbreak? Explain in full what you do or don’t agree with, explaining why you believe this. If you were Prime Minister at the moment, what would you do differently?
  2. Maths – Fewest squares (don’t worry if you don’t have squared paper – you can roughly draw the grid on plain paper)

Draw a grid that is an 11 x 13 rectangle.   ‘What is the fewest number of squares you can draw inside of your 11×13 rectangle?’ Let me know if you have            any questions that you might need the answer to. Explain your findings on the blog. Include any drawings that you produce in your home learning pack.

3.  Geography – revision of unit so far.

Explain what the following are, giving any examples that you can find: natural resource, raw material, sustainable, fossil fuels.

What natural resources can be found in our homes or schools? What are they used for? How are they created?

Name some items that are not natural  resources – how do you know?

How are fossil fuels created?

Continue reading as much as possible.

I think they are doing the right thing because we are getting more grass and more nature is growing because people are staying in side .And not going out side so if they are staying in side then they wont trash the world . All so they are doing the right thing because the coronavirus started of germs and we are not getting germs in side .

I think it’s just 1 square because it the fewest you can have and the sides are all equal. Its the lowest you can have. Even if you put a quarter of a square its till only 1 square.

I think that the government are doing the right thing by keeping us inside because if there is a big gathering there is more likely to be a lot of people and some people might have symptoms which they do not know of, then there is more chance of other people getting the corona virus and then there is also a higher risk of death. What about the homeless? I think its not fair that the homeless cant stay at home like us. If there is someone walking around outside with symptoms the poor homeless wont be able to be looked after. I don’t really agree that the schools are still open for some children because if someone from the hospital has the corona virus then the adults that work at the hospital will carry the virus around and then if their children get the symptoms then they will go to school and then the teachers have a high risk of getting it. Before the virus the world was polluted and now that everyone is staying inside the world is able to breath a little. If i was prime minister I would have stopped all the flights into the UK. I would have also closed all of the schools earlier because then they are safe. I also would have closed the schools for everyone.

Great points Lydia – well done. Many people forget about the homeless in this difficult time. I loved your point about the world being able to breath now.

    Hello Mrs Millard,
I totally agree with what the prime minister is doing because he is just trying to keep us all safe. But he could have closed the borders when he heard there was a new virus in China and they were sending everyone back to their home countries.

Natural resources: materials that are made from the environment.

Raw materials: materials that aren’t altered with and just come as they are.

Fossil fuels: old plants and animals that have decomposed and turned into coal, oil or natural gas.

    Not a natural resource:
Tap water, clothes, glue, tables and chairs.

    hello Mrs Millard,
I agree with the government and what they are doing about the corona virus. we should stay 2 meters apart because it’s less likely that people could catch it and if people catch the coronavirus people have more of a chance of dying. People should stay in there house as long as they can because you never know if you have it or not so there is a less chance of more and more people dying .You should wash your hand as much as possible, you should do this because someone who has the coronavirus might have touched something and you touched it you have the corona on your hands then you should wash it all of.
If I was the prim minster I would change something. I would change that if somebody has one of the symptoms , that part will shut down not the whole country. for example if your in a village that village will shut down and if your in a court that court will shut down.

    Dear Mrs Millard,
natural resources are something that the environment made[not man made].Some examples are sea water, air, natural gas we use sea water for rain so the water goes up to the clouds and comes down as rain. We use air for breathing if we had no air we will not live. We use natural gas for letting air out of us like burping. An example of fossil fuels are natural gas, coal, oil. The natural that are in some peoples house could be wood, animals, air, plants. Wood is made from trees and it is used for furniture , animals can not be made from something they are used for a pet , air can not be made from something it is used for breathing so we don’t die ,plants are made from seed then they grow into a plant we use it to eat or to made so more things like Weetabix .

    Geography
A natural resource is something that was made by nature EG sunlight, water, plants. A fossil fuel is something that was made millions of years ago and it cant be made again EG, coal, oil, gas. Sustainable means it is renewable EG wind power, solar power. Raw materials are found naturally and haven’t been changed into anything else EG coal, sand, clay.

At home we have water from the rain we use it to water the plants. Fruit from the crops we eat them.

Glass is used for our windows and it is not a natural resource because it is man made. My house is made out of bricks. It is not a natural resource because it is made from something else, clay.
