Good morning Year 6. I hope you had a lovely evening and we look forward to seeing you on Zoom at 9:05am.

Warm up challenge (20 minutes)

Please spend sometime completing quizzes at:

https://readtheory.org/auth/login

Let us know if you can’t remember your login details.

Reading (30 minutes)

Work through the PowerPoint recapping the whole play and answer the questions as you go.

Midsummer-Nights-Dream

Writing (1 hour 10 minutes)

Read through the end of the play:

To me, I feel like the ending should say ‘And they all lived happily ever after …’

Do you agree?

What do you think of the ending?

Now look at Puck’s final speech at the end of the play:

PUCK

If we shadows have offended,

Think but this, and all is mended,

That you have but slumbered here

While these visions did appear.

And this weak and idle theme,

No more yielding but a dream,

So, good night unto you all.

Give me your hands, if we be friends,

And Robin shall restore amends.

What do you think Puck is saying here?

To summarise, Puck is saying he hopes they haven’t offended but everything has now been fixed. If anything goes wrong again, he will fix it.

Monologues are often used in Shakespeare’s plays and they can have a great impact on the audience.

Do you know what a monologue is?

A monologue is a speech delivered by one person, who exposes inner thoughts and provides insights into his or her character.

The character/person speaks out their thoughts about a specific event or situation and tells us how they are feeling at that particular time.

Monologues are always written in first person (I think/I feel).

Watch this monologue from The Incredibles:

Here is the text of his monologue:

See? Now you respect me, because I’m a threat. That’s the way it works. Turns out, there are a lot of people, whole countries, who want respect, and they will pay through the nose to get it. How do you think I got rich? I invented weapons, and now I have a weapon that only I can defeat, and when I unleash it, I’ll get… You sly dog! You got me monologuing! I can’t believe it. It’s cool, huh? Zero-point energy. I save the best inventions for myself. Am I good enough now? Who’s super now? I’m Syndrome, your nemesis and…Oh, brilliant.

Answer these questions about Sydrome’s monologue:

  • Who is he speaking to?
  • What is it that he wants?
  • What is he feeling at this point?

Now read the monologue again:

Underline a question.

Circle the punctuation that tells you his stream-of-thought has been interrupted.

Highlight a sentence that tells you he is feeling vengeful.*

*vengeful=seeking revenge and/or to harm someone because of a past injuries

As you have noticed, a monologue occurs when a character is feeling passionate about a situation or an idea. We say this is when “the stakes are high.” When a character feels they have something to lose or win, their emotions grow much stronger.

Lets look at another monologue on the link below:

Here is the text from her monologue:

Then, what shall we die for? You will listen to me! Listen! (stares into their eyes) The Brethren will still be looking here, to us, to the Black Pearl, to lead. And what will they see? Frightened bilge rats aboard a derelict ship? No. No, they will see free men and freedom! And what the enemy will see is the flash of our cannons. They will hear the ring of our swords, and they will know what we can do. By the sweat of our brows and the strength of our backs, and the courage of our hearts. Gentlemen. Hoist the colours!

In a monologue, it is important to understand the following areas:

CHARACTER:   Who is speaking?

AUDIENCE:   Who are they speaking to?

SETTING:   Where are they?

GOAL:   What do they want to see happen?

Thinking about Elizabeth’s monologue, answer the following questions:

CHARACTER: Who is speaking?

AUDIENCE: Who is she speaking to?

SETTING: Where are they?

GOAL: What does she want to see happen?

Task:

I want you to write a monologue all about A midsummer Night’s Dream. You can choose to be any character (including a narrator). You can also complete your monologue about 1 section of the play or the whole thing. The choice is yours.

Maths (1 hour)

Starter challenge:

Here are today’s Rapid Reasoning questions.

Main challenge:

As we have talked about before, finding the different possibilities in maths can be very important. This can certainly be true in algebra because we might have a question like this:

2a + b = 17

At the moment, we don’t know the value of a or the value of b. We have to think what it could be and come up with all the possibilities. Remember that different letters need to have a different value.

2a means 2 x a

(2 x a) + b = 17

So the possibilities are:

(2 x 1) + 15 = 17

(2 x 2) + 13 = 17

(2 x 3) + 11 = 17

(2 x 4) + 9 = 17

(2 x 5) + 7 = 17

(2 x 6) + 5 = 17

(2 x 7) + 3 = 17

(2 x 8) + 1 = 17

So a could be:

1           2           3         4          5          6         7        8

b could be:

15           13           11           9         7          5         3       1

What do you notice?

Find all of the possibilities for the following question:

2a + b = 20

How many possibilities did you find?

Now try these. Remember to find all of the possibilities.

1) a + b = 14

2) b + 7 = a

3) a – b = 12

4) ab = 20

5) 3a + b = 12

6) 6a + b = 25

7) 12a + 2b = 48

8) 6a + 16 = 4b

9) 10a = 7b

10) 12a divided by 4 = b

Challenge:

Now use the skills that you have learnt to try and solve the following problems. Remember to find all of the possibilities.

For all questions, find what the numbers could be.

1) The total of two numbers is 13. Both numbers are between 2 and 9.

2) The difference between two numbers is 6. Both numbers are between 12 and 21.

3) The total of two numbers is 16. Both numbers are between 5 and 12.

4) The difference between two numbers is 9. Both numbers are between 21 and 34.

5) Two numbers added together make nineteen. They are no smaller than seven.

6) One number is eleven more than the other. Each number is no smaller than thirteen and no larger than twenty-six.

7) The sum of two numbers is 24. Both numbers are smaller than 16.

8) One number is thirteen less than the other. The numbers are both between six and twenty-three.

Science (1 hour 15 minutes)

Today’s question is:

How can living things be classified and in what ways is classification useful?

Have a look at the statements below. For each statement, decide if it happens all of the time, some or the time or none or the time. Make sure you are able to give a reason why you think that.

Classification keys are used to classify animals.

Fungi are plants.

Birds fly.

Animals have backbones.

Reptiles have gills.

Micro-organisms are bacteria.

Task:

Can you think of 3 statements of your own that your classmates could try.

At 1:30pm, join us on Zoom, where we will be playing a classification quiz and I will explain your different task choices.

Meeting ID: 925 2143 1105

Passcode: gFUA6S

Task:

Option 1:

Create your own set of loop cards that we can play as a class. Make sure there are at least 30 cards and make sure your loop comes to an end. Make each instruction clear.

Option 2:

Answer the question

How can living things be classified and in what ways is classification useful?

in as much detail as you can. You can present it anyway you like including a PowerPoint, information leaflet etc.

Miss the text of Puck sounds a bit like a luluby but also sounds like a monologue
This is my monologue about art.

I like drawing because it brings me away from all the bad sides in life
and its like it takes me to a different dimension or a different world I
sometimes forget where I am when I do art but then it takes about five
to realize I’m at school, home and my grandmas house that’s why I
think that art is a good way to socialize peacefully .
