Thursday 4th February 2021

Good morning Year 6, we hope you are all well and we are looking forward to seeing you all on Zoom at 9:05am.

Warm up challenge (15 minutes)

In your opinion, should children have to wear school uniform to school?

Tell us what you think and why you think that.

Reading (30 minutes)

Read this information about Puck and Shakespeare’s inspiration when creating :

Puck is a character in a play called A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This play was written by William Shakespeare. In this play, Puck is a servant to the Fairy King, Oberon. Puck has some amazing abilities. For example, he can travel around the world in 40 minutes. In spite of his abilities, Puck makes a few mistakes in the play that create confusion for the other characters. For example, he puts a love potion into the wrong person’s eyes. He also plays tricks. He puts a donkey‘s head on one character.

Puck was not Shakespeare’s invention. He was a character in folklore called ‘pouke’. He was known as early as 1000 AD. He was an evil, dangerous demon. By the time of Geoffrey Chaucer, he had become linked with the Biblical devil. By Shakespeare’s day, he was known as Puck, Robin Goodfellow, and Hobgoblin. He was a goblin who made mischief.

By the time of Shakespeare and other Elizabethan poets, Puck had become a combination of English folklore and English country life. Shakespeare writes that Puck would frighten the village girls, ruin the butter, and lead travelers in the night the wrong way.

Shakespeare used a description of Puck from Reginald Scot’s The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584).[2] Scot describes Puck with disapproval. He points out that people no longer believe in him. Scot also tells of a man whose head was replaced with the head of a donkey.

Based on everything that you know about Puck, complete a role on the wall which shows his personality and what you imagine he looks like.

You can draw your own role on the wall or use the template below:

Role on the wall

Writing (45 minutes)

Today, I would like you to write your balanced argument to answer the following question:

Should Puck remove the spell?

Take some time with it and write it as if you were in school.

Things I will be looking for:

  • A clear introduction
  • A balanced amount of points
  • Some detailed reasons for each point
  • A conclusion which might include your opinion.

I will also be looking for:

  • A range of punctuation
  • A range of connectives
  • Ways to interest the reader including questions
  • Use of formal language (posh words)

Good luck and make it really impressive! We look forward to reading them.

Maths (40 minutes)

Starter challenge:

Here are today’s 5 in 5 questions:

1) 879 x 9 =

2)_________  divided by 3 = 1.45

3) 3/5 x 2 =

4)

5) 896,932 – 1,859 =

Main activity:

Today, we will be using all of the knowledge that we have learnt so far this week by answering some reasoning questions about coordinates. For each one, I will give you some help before you begin.

Task 1:

So for this question, we need to use the coordinate grid to see if these coordinates would be on the line. To do this, I am going to look at each coordinate individually. I’m even going to jot the points on there to double check.

We will start with (3,2)

I can see that (3,2) is on the point.

Now lets look at (9,10). You might notice that (9,10) is not on the grid so we have to use our judgement to decide where it will be. Like this:

I can see that (9,10) is not on the line.

Can you continue and see if the other points are on the line?

Task 2:

For this question, you need to find the missing coordinate which would make the final corner of a square.

Hint: Think about the space between each point. Could you draw on points and see what makes a square?

Task 3:

For this question, you need to use the information you have.

Let’s start by looking at B. What do we know? We know that B is on the same x axis as C and the ssame y axis as A. Can we use that information to find the coordinates of B?

Now let’s look at M. M is half way between D and C. The X axis of D is 2 and the X axis of C is 8 – what is half way between those numbers?

For the Y axis, it is on the same y axis as 2 other points. What is its y axis?

Task 4:

For this question, we need to find the coordinates of point A and we know that each point is equally spaced. That means there is the same amount of distance between each one.

If I look at the point that are labelled, the x axis has gone from 4 to 6 and the y axis has gone from 2 to 3. Can you use that information to find out A?

Challenge: Can you use the information that you have to work out the coordinates of B?

Task 5:

For this question, you are given the coordinates of points B and D. Can you use them to help you find the coordinates for A?

Task 6:

For this question, you can see that the 2 shapes on the grid are identical squares. Think about what we know about squares and use that knowledge to help you find out the missing coordinates.

Task 7:

Again, use your knowledge of shapes and the information that you have got to work out the coordinate of A and B.

Task 8:

We know that all of the dots are equally spaced out. What is the difference between the coordinates of point A and point B? Can you use that information and how many points there are to work out C?

Let us know if you need any help with any question.

PE (1 hour)

Spend the next hour completing some work on your Jasmine maths and complete this week’s Active challenge. Look out for the blog posts.

Let us know if you need your logins.

TT Rockstars

Continue with this week’s competition. Who will win?

Story Time

Enjoy today’s episode of The Explorer.

Another fantastic Thursday Year 6. Remember to send any work to use so that we can prepare your certificates. I will also be doing a new Hall of Fame tomorrow.

We look for to seeing you on Zoom tomorrow for Fancy Dress Friday!

No, because school uniform is uncomfortable and very thin so if children wore their own clothes it will prevent them from having more school days off

Children should wear school uniform because if they were their clothes they will just feel like they’re not at school and they don’t have to do anything because they’re in their clothes and not school uniform.

🏫 Should children were school uniform?🏫

    YES
Children should wear school uniforms because you can tell which school they belong to and also because it looks smart.

    No
Children should not wear school uniforms because some parents are busy with work that they have not got the time to go and buy them and also because some people have lost their jobs so they can’t afford school uniform.

Should Puck take the potion out or not?

In my opinion I think that puck should take the potion out of Lysander then he should put a memory potion in so that they forget all about it.

Also if my opinion was opposite I would say that he take the potion out then he can put the memory potion in . But also if he puts to many potions in their eyes it could cause blindness

He could also get banished by Oberon or Titania because he put it in Oberon’s wife (Titania) and if Titania found out he will probably get banished.

I think that we shouldn’t wear school clothes because if you don’t have more than one pair than you have to wear the same clothes that will be dirty very fast.

Children should wear school uniform because say if someone who has more money than you and they go to school wearing designer clothes and it would make people who don’t have that much money feel poor .And those who cant afford have less chance of getting bullied and it would make us all equal .Also people complain about teachers not wearing uniform but they used to wear it when they were at schoo.l

    Should punk remove the spell
Punk should because then hermia can be with her true love and run away together in to the forest
And live happy. If punk removes the spell hermia and lysander can always run away before demetrious Wakes up. Or they can leave demetrious in love with helen as then demetrious and helena are happy and hermia and lysander are happy.

If punk remove the spell on both of them demetrious will run after them and helena will never have demetrious love her and she will be sad Until she finds some one else. If punk removes the spell every one will be miserable and Will annoy each other.
Also if punk leaves the spell on them all he will be told of and in trouble as he did it all wrong and did not fix it .

This argument has circulated for years whether puck should remove the spell or not.

    For
Puck should remove the spell because his queen has fell in love with a donkey.Hermia is upset with the fact that Lysander was insulting her

    Against
He should not remove the spell because Demetrius has finally fell in love with Helena and he should redo the spell on Lysander
