Year 5- Monday 25th January
Buenas dias todos la class! Bienvenido a semana quatro.
Good morning everyone! Wecome to week 4.
I hope you all had fun in the snow yesterday, end me any snow pictures!
Morning task
Maths- 75 minutes
We are starting something new in Maths, which is statistics (or data handling).
We’ll start with pictograms (where each picture represents an item or group)
Now pictographs and bar graphs are about unrelated data. So if we asked Mr Bushell what his favourite pizza is- pepperoni and if mine is meat feast If we put that on a graph the results are not related- so we can’t then work out that Mrs Munroe’s favourite pizza is anchovy. We call this discrete data.
Watch the video link
This is a year 4 activity, as revision because you might not have done a lot of work on charts in year 4. But we did lots in year 3, so I know you will understand this- just remember to check the key of the pictograms!
Now try the worksheet.
Challenge
English- 90 minutes- We have a zoom at 11 to go through the text
Task 1- Read through the text (in zoom)
Task 2- (30 minutes)
Where is this part of the play set?
When is this part of the play set? How do you know?
Why are Oberon and Titania arguing? Give evidence from the text.
Who is Puck? How do you know?
Name 2 of the characters in the script.
Task3- (20 minutes)
Have a look at some of the pictures of forest settings below and some which the RSC has used during different versions of the play at this website. Collect some vocabulary and description about what you might hear, see, smell and touch in the forest- there is a planning sheet below which might help. The more ideas you can collect the easier it will be to do your writing later in the week.
https://www.rsc.org.uk/shakespeare-learning-zone/a-midsummer-nights-dream/staging/setting
History- 60- 75 minutes
Now we know how World War 1 started, which countries were involved, when it happened and how it affected the life of Walter Tull. Let’s look at what life was actually like in the trenches.
Each side of the war dug into the ground to create trenches (like a ditch) that were miles long. This is where many of the soldiers spent months, or even years of their lives. It was not nice, it was muddy, noisy and wet. Food was poor, sleep was rare and lice and the damp caused lots of problems and diseases.
Find out as much as you can about life in the trenches. Then show me what you have found out.
On the powerpoint it says write a diary entry. But I will let you to decide how to present your research to me in a more creative way- a powerpoint presentation, a piece of drama, a piece of writing (could be a non-chronological report, newspaper report, diary or letter), a poster, a model (with labels), a diagram (with labels). Show me what you have learnt.
Spellings- 30 minutes
We’re going to continue with ssion, tion and cian.
Below is a word investigation sheet- we often use them in school. In the centre is the root word, I’ve done the word compete, so I have found related words (by adding prefixes and suffixes), counted the syllables, used it in a sentence and given a definition.
Can you pick one of the words below to investigate yourself?
categorise, educate, profess, discuss, aggressive, solute, attract, affect, operate

Trench warfare is a type of land warfare using occupied fighting lines largely comprising military trenches, in which troops are well-protected from the enemy’s small arms fire and are substantially sheltered from artillery. Trench warfare became archetypically associated with World War I (1914–1918), when the Race to the Sea rapidly expanded trench use on the Western Front starting in September 1914.[1]
Trench warfare proliferated when a revolution in firepower was not matched by similar advances in mobility, resulting in a gruelling form of warfare in which the defender held the advantage.[2] On the Western Front in 1914–1918, both sides constructed elaborate trench, underground, and dugout systems opposing each other along a front, protected from assault by barbed wire. The area between opposing trench lines (known as “no man’s land”) was fully exposed to artillery fire from both sides. Attacks, even if successful, often sustained severe casualties.
The development of armoured warfare and combined arms tactics permitted static lines to be bypassed and defeated, leading to the decline of trench warfare after the war.
Following World War I, “trench warfare” became a byword for stalemate, attrition, sieges, and futility in conflict
Hi Franek, great research.
Tell me 3 things you would dislike about being in a trench during WW1. Were there any good points?
It is set in a forest
It is set in the night because puck said it was set in the night.
They are fighting about the changeling boy
Puck is Oberon’s servant and it says in the text
I can hear the wind blowing through the air and the tweeting .
I can smell the flowers and nectar .
I can see a path way a lake and trees
It is not a good Idea because the image is a drink not children.
Great work Jayden, I love the smell of flowers and nectar.
You’re right, the idea is not good because it won’t be easy to tell parts of the whole.
The good points are that the Trenches gave some protection
1) They were over flowing with water when it started to rain
2) They were covered with rats and mud
3) They were dying from hunger not from being shot
Thanks Franek.
The trenches did give some protection.
ENGILISH

To day was not the best day, all you could hear was gun shots firing constantly my ears are ringing i can hardly hear anything. My General told all the soldiers on the British side that we were going to attack the enemy as soon as it is night. It was time to start digging our way to the enemy we hid bombs and grenades we ran back as fast as we could hearing all of them go off at once. the night came so i decided to g some sleep.
Yoursensoriously Brooke
This is excellent Brooke. You’ve captured a lot of the problems of the trenches.
Did you find anything good that happened in the trenches?
Dear diary,
Today was my 20th birthday and I was in the trenches , it’s cold soggy and wet and all I long for is to be at home with my love bing family, The sound of gunshots is all I can hear and the rain is poring down, I am covered In mud and very uncomfortable, I have barely slept since I got her in fear of not waking up, Tommorow will hopefully be a better day and this horrible war will end soon , I miss my family so dearly
Yours Sincerely

History
Hi mum.
I have survived another week in the trench and war. Nothing has happened so far no attacks no bombs and no gas attacks. Life is a bit dull having to do chores all day and I’m on the front line with the most attacks but there has been none since two weeks ago. But the soldiers are saying that there is a bomb coming. To be honest most of the people in the war have died in the nasty conditions of the trenches. There are lice rats and lots of diseases also maggots and even worse you barely get any food or sleep. Just writing this letter to say I’m okay.
You’re loved one…Owen.
