Reception home learning Monday 25th January

Good morning everyone

We hope you had a great weekend and enjoyed the snow!  This week we join a whole school initiative on learning about a man called William Shakespeare and one of his plays “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”  We will be looking at aspects of this for the next 3 weeks until half term.  If you have siblings, brothers or sisters in school, then they will be learning about the same play.

Just a reminder for parents and carers of the expectations of home learning:

  • There will be a daily Zoom registration @ 10.30 for Hargreaves class and 10.45am for Nightingale class, during which a member of the team will greet the children and discuss the activities for the day ahead.
  • The expectation is for children to be on the daily Zoom registration and engaging with the set activities on our Blog – Phonics, Literacy, Maths and a curriculum subject.
  • If possible. please upload examples of  children’s work across onto Tapestry and we will respond to your child.

Please can you remind the children that during registration they should be ‘super sitting’ as they would at school.  That is sitting up, hands in their lap, looking and listening.  If you cannot complete all the tasks everyday, we would ask that you try to do the phonics daily.  If your child is not keen then we would suggest doing less and maybe repeating a previous week’s phonics so that they are at least consolidating their learning even if not learning new sounds.  Thank you.

Phonics

As always we start with phonics.  Please make sure you are getting your child to do the right one – we sent an e-mail to everyone to tell them which group to do.  Some children are doing Group A which includes sounds that they have not been taught yet.  A good way of telling if they are doing the correct group is whether they can write the words and sentences independently before the teacher writes them.  If they cannot do this, and wait to copy, then move to group B or group C.  All children work at their own pace and if they are copying the phonics then they are not learning.

Group A – this is for children who normally do their phonics with Mrs Whitestone at school

Group B – This is for children who normally do their phonics with Mrs O’Hagan, Mrs Tucker or Mrs Henderson.  This week we are going to start to learn ‘2 letters-1 sound’

Group C – This is for children who normally do their phonics with Mrs Cieslik or Mrs Szabo.  Please ignore the date as this was recorded whilst we were self isolating.  This week we are consolidating the learning with k,l,r and u.

Reading

This week we are going to use the Oxford Owls website to read some books on line.  There is another blog post for today that has links to different books for each of the phonics groups.  There are also instruction as to how to access the books if you have not been able to.  You need to be logged onto the site before you click the links.

Literacy

For the next three weeks we will be learning about a man, who lived a long time ago, called William Shakespeare and a play that he wrote called Midsummer Night’s Dream.  I will tell you a little bit about him here but can you find out an interesting fact about him to write in our book.  You could record yourself telling me the fact or you could write it down or your grown up could help you type it up.  We will write our own book like the one I will show you in the video.

Maths starter

This week we are back with the White Rose activities which we hope, consolidate, the children’s learning in class/at home.  Choose the first activity – Matching 6,7 and 8.

Main

For the main part of our maths lessons this week we are going to concentrate on ‘counting on’ that is a maths skills when adding two numbers, you begin counting from the largest number and add the second number to it.  We will try to do this lots of ways this week to teach the children to ‘count on’ rather than ‘count all’ when adding.  We will begin with a game we have played before with Mrs O’Hagan.

Physical Development

Last Friday we did Harrison’s foil rolling activity.  This week he’s been busy demonstrating some more to help the children build up the strength in their hands.  This is a game of speed and skill.

Story

William Shakespeare’s stories are a little bit too long for us to record – although next week we will read some of his play A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream.  But for this week we will listen to a variety of stories.  The first is a called Penguin Pig and is a good reminder about staying safe whilst we are working at home on computers or tablets.

Have a lovely day everyone.
