Year 3 Home learning Monday 11/1/21

Good morning everyone! The Year 3 team hope you had a lovely weekend and you are ready for this weeks learning. Remember we can be contacted by the year 3 email if you need help.

Marvellous Monday

Morning work:

English:

Reading:

This is a playscript. Showing the conversation between the fairy and Puck, another fairy. They meet in the magical forest. Some of the words may be difficult but William Shakespeare wrote this many years ago but there is vocabulary with definitions to help. You may need to read a few times.

Fairy:
Either I mistake your shape,
Or else you are that shrewd and knavish sprite,
That frights the maidens of the villagery,
Skim milk, and sometimes labour in the quern,
Sometimes make the drink to bear no harm,
Mislead night wanderers, laughing at their harm?
Hobgoblin they call you and sweet puck
You do their work,

Puck (another fairy)
I am that merry wanderer of the night,
I jest to Oberon and make him smile.
And sometime lurk in gossip bowl,
And when she drinks,
Down topples she,
They hold their hips and laugh

Vocabulary
Shrewd – mischievous
Knavish- not honest
Maidens – young lady
Quern – flour mill
Harm- hurt
Wanderer – someone who travels around rather than being in one place
Merry – cheerful/ lively
Jest – joke
Lurk – hiding/ sneaking

Now answer the questions below in full sentences.

  1. Give me two ways that Puck is naughty. (use what the fairy says bout Puck)
  2. Which two words does the fairy use to describe Puck is not well behaved?
  3. The fairy says ‘ they call and sweet Puck.’ Is Puck really sweet? Explain your answer.
  4. What word tells me Puck hides from people he is about to trick?
  5. ‘When she drinks, down topples she,’ What trick has Puck played on the lady?

Writing:

Well, you are never going to believe this! This is what we saw when we came in to class this morning. I think we have a good idea who it was from the clues that have been left, ‘P’. Well, I wonder if we know someone or something beginning with the letter P. They have left a message – actually it is an envelope. ‘GOOD LUCK’ what does that mean? I wonder what is inside the envelope? What do you think it could be. I wonder if you could write the letter that could be inside and think about who we know who starts with letter P. I believe we just met them.  You can decide what goes in your letter. Use your imagination. We will be looking for:

  • who they are writing to
  • who the letter is from
  • paragraphs
  • try and give us as much detail in your letter about what ‘P” wants or is trying to tell us.
  • think carefully about your spelling
  • USE YOUR IMAGINATION

Challenge: Can you use some of the language we looked at last week in your letter? Special prize for those children.

Maths skills:

Arrange the given digits to make a number that meets the given criteria.

Maths:

Recap 5 times-table

Click to access Y2-Autumn-Block-4-WO8-The-5-times-table-2019.pdf

Handwriting

I know the lady is writing with her left hand but we have some children who also do and she has lines but you can draw your own or just use lined paper. Give it a go and see how you get on.

On Line safety:

You can add your comments to the question in the blog or your could send in an email to our Year 3 email address.

History:

We are starting the Romans!! I know some of you love the Romans so you should enjoy this. Read the information and make a mind map of the facts you have learnt.

The Romans in Britain
43 AD to 410 AD

Roman army

The itallian flag Romans came to English flag Britain nearly 2000 years ago and changed our country. Even today, evidence of the Romans being here, can be seen in the ruins of Roman buildings, forts, roads, and baths can be found all over Britain.

The Romans invaded other countries too. The Roman Empire covered much of Europe, north Africa, and the Middle East.
(see map)

Roman helmetWho were the Romans?

The Romans lived in Rome, a city in the centre of the country of Italy Italian flag.

Where is Italy

One day, some years before Jesus Christ was born, the Romans came to Britain.

Who founded Rome?

According to the Roman legend, Romulus was the founder of Rome. Romulus and his twin brother Remus were the sons of the God Mars. When they were very young they were abandoned by the banks of the River Tiber and left to fend for themselves. Luckily for them they were found by a she-wolf who took pity on them fed them with her milk.  The boys were later found by a shepherd who raised them. The boys grew up to be very strong and clever and they decided to build a town on the spot where the Shepherd had found them. They named their town Rome.

Here is an example of a mind map. We have done them before.

Yes I think harm and knavish are two words that show Puck is naughty too.
Puck is merry, but do you think that someone who is sweet would be so naughty?
He did make her faint didn’t he, how naughty!
Have another go at questions 2 and 4, don’t forget to tell us which work shows Puck hides when he pulls his tricks.

In the text it does say Puck is merry, but do you think he is sweet when he pulls naughty tricks?
Have another go at question 2 to find words that show Puck is not well behaved and also question 4, look for which word tells us Puck hides when he pulls the tricks.
