Today I have learned what is Divali.

I now know that Divali is called a ‘Festival of Lights ‘ because houses, shops and public places are decorated with small oil lamps called ‘diyas’. This festival of lights marks the beginning of a New Year in Hindu calendar.

I found out that Divali always falls some time between October and November, but the exact date varies each year as the Hindu calendar is based on the Moon.

In 2020, Diwali is on Saturday 14 November.

Now I know the story of Divali, which was about how warrior prince Rama with a help of Monkey god Hanuman, rescued princess Sita from the hands of evil king called Ravana. When Rama and Sita reunited and returned home at night time, they found that all of the villagers had lit lamps to guide them home. This is why Hindus light lamps on Diwali!

I also found out that this five day festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.

People are celebrating it by lighting the lamps, making colourful patterns called ‘ rangoli ‘ using powders and pastes. They also celebrate by spring-cleaning their houses, wearing new clothes, exchanging gifts and making huge fireworks displays.
