Tuesday 7th July 2020 – Writing plan Task.

Good morning Year 4,

Today we are going to plan how to write an art critique for the painting below. The painting is called ‘Men of the Docks.’ We did start looking at this when we were in school so you should have some idea. You can either handwrite and send a photo to our email or comment using the headings. You are only writing notes in response to the questions. Using headings to organise your notes/ plan.

STEP 1: DESCRIBE
List everything you see, even if you don’t know what it is.
Ask yourself:
• What do I see? Use expanded nouns
• What colours are used? What are the shades of colour?
• What shapes are visible?
• Where is the scene?

• Are there any unknown objects?

STEP 2: ANALYSE
Explain how what you see is being used in the piece of art.

• How are lines used?
• How are shapes working? How do they fit together?
• How are textures effective?
• How does my eye move around the piece? Explain your eye’s journey around the painting?

STEP 3: INTERPRET
What is going on in the artwork?
Ask yourself:
• What do I see happening in the painting?
• How does this make me feel?
• What is the most important part of this piece?
• Why did the artist create this piece?

• What does the art ‘say’ to me?

STEP 4: DECIDE
Do you like this piece of art? Why or why not?
Ask yourself:
• What do I like about this piece?
• What did the artist do best?
• What do I dislike about this piece?
• What would I change if I were the artist?

Ship, people, snow, buildings, steam, clouds, horses, wall.
I see a giant, steam powered ship, I see white, poshly dressed people, I see beautiful, white horses, I see cold, white snow, I see tall, dull buildings, I see thick, grey steam, I see huge, polluted clouds, I see a tall, blue-ish wall.
Blue, black, red, white, peach, cyan, grey, brown.
    Cuboids, cubes, spheres, pyramids, cylinders.
    Southampton.

    To make shapes.
    They work by making objects.
The textures make the material visible.
    Ship, buildings, clouds, people, wall.

I see the “Titanic” taking off.
    It makes me feel interested.
The most important part as I think is the “Titanic”.
I think he created this piece to celebrate the “Titanic”.

I like the ship the most.
    He did the horses best.
I do not dislike anything about this piece.
I would change the texture of the ship.

    STEP 1: DESCRIBE
    • What do I see? Use expanded nouns
I see a large ship which could be the Titanic. There are small boats with smoke coming out. I can see large buildings in the back ground. I could see two appealing horses. I can see a dull sky.

    • What colours are used? What are the shades of colour?
Red, yellow, grey, black, blue, green and brown. The shades are mixed to make a colour.

    • What shapes are visible?
Square, circle, rectangle, pyramid, cube, cone, cylinder and sphere.

    • Where is the scene?
In Eastern America in a big city.

    • Are there any unknown objects?
Snow or ice in the sea.

    STEP 2: ANALYSE

    • How are lines used?
Not just straight they also are curved since nothing can be straight.

    • How are shapes working? How do they fit together?
They are working by moving in reality to be working.

    • How are textures effective?
They are effective when done properly in time.

    • How does my eye move around the piece? Explain your eye’s journey around the painting?
First the people then the boat because on the side then the buildings at the back then the other side which is a dark house and the sea because the middle at the end.

    STEP 3: INTERPRET

    • What do I see happening in the painting?
It is telling that the ship is getting aboard and leaving.

    • How does this make me feel?
Make me feel that there is no more space since it is really busy.

    • What is the most important part of this piece?
The shadow because when this is made it is showing a really good artist.

    • Why did the artist create this piece?
Because it is telling us to remember this which tells me the Titanic.

    • What does the art ‘say’ to me?
“The art telling me that the ship is starting to leave.”

    STEP 4: DECIDE

    • What do I like about this piece?
That the artist has so many spaces that he/she used it for important things.

    • What did the artist do the best?
By not giving up and made a beautiful picture.

    • What do I dislike about this piece?
If it could have been a blue sky so it was bright.

    • What would I change if I were the artist?
The sky to blue straight away.

    2. There is black, white, blue, grey and yellow.
    3. The scene is some men chatting and people in there building and some people taking of to there ship

    4. Lines are used to make steps for the building boats and the mens body
5.shapes are working so they make the painting
    6. The textures are affective so it makes it look realistic
    7. They start in the middle and the start moving out until the painting is finished

    8. I see some people chatting and having fun

    1. I see a big boat and some little ones.
    Tall white horses.
    Tall, proud people.
    rectangles, squares.
    next to a busy city.
Blue, black, white, greenish and brown, peach and grey.

    2. Straight, curly, curved,
    The texture helps the painting.
I look at one bit and I see it again and I see something like the painting is coming to life without the texture it would be a painting not coming to life.
The buildings are built out of squares and rectangles.

    3. I see boats pulling in and out people waiting and talking.
    Horses walking.
Happy and annoyed because the good thing is that we get supplies and the annoying one is we can hear mostly the boats when we talk to one an other.
To show us what the docks could be like.

    4. I like the way he done the waves and how he curved the brush to make them.
    The waves”
    The buildings.
Buildings because they are a bit plain and kinda smudged.

I see people, a city and transportation.
The colours are red, Black, Blue, peach and grey.
The shapes are ovals, cylinders and rectangles.
The scene could be in Southampton as the ship looks like the titanic.
    There is no unknown objects.

The lines are used to add simple shapes to object’s with strait lines.
The shapes fit together using lines to connect them together.
The textures are effective to make it look more lifelike then others.
MY eyes took a texture journey to explore the world of textures.

I see a scene like the titanic is is being boarded with passengers.
It makes me feel like the titanic is leaving already.
The most important thing is it’s the Titanic’s First journey.
The artist painted this for the Titanic’s First journey.
The art is saying to me that I’m very important to this artist.

I like this painting as they put a lot of detail on the boat .
The artist did the best on the boat as it looks mostly like the titanic.
I dislike the people as the artist could do a bit better.
I would like to change the people as the don’t look as lifelike as the rest.

I can see some big boats, people.
They have used Grey, white, light blue and peachy colors.
Square, cylinder, curves are the shapes I see that are visible.
The scene might be taken at a big city where there is a sea with boats swimming around?

The lines are used shaded, wonky, curved, wavy, flat.
My eye goes around the picture from sides to middle. First I looked at the boats then the people.
The art says to me “ am I beautiful, will you buy me?

I see two people on horses, boats, people waiting, big buildings.
This makes me feel calm, it makes me calm because art should make you calm.
The most important part in the painting is the middle ands sides.
The artist made this piece because he wanted people to like it then buy it.

I like this piece because i like how they did the shading on the boats, sky, people.
The Artist drawn the boat on trhe right the best.
I dislike nothing on the piece.
I would not change anything because the painting is beautiful.

    1. Describe
I can see massive boats, chatty people, grey smog, white horses, chimneys and some tall building at the background.
The colours used are black, grey, white, blue and brown. Shades are grey, dark and light, some brown shading and a little bit of black has been used.
The shapes I can see are rectangles for the building at the back, circles for round faces, dome squares on the boat on the left and couple of triangles below the black chimney.
The scene is at the docks, outside, near the sea.
The only unknown object is the round docking thing.

    2. Analyse
The lines are wiggly, not very straight, the painting was probably done quite quickly to capture the moment.
The shapes create a nice, lively scene. They do not interfere with each other. The shapes are much cleaner at the front of the picture, where people are standing and blurred in the background, especially where the building are.
The textures bring attention to the horses and snow where the man are standing. Also the light used to lighten up the large boat.
My eye journey starts from the large boat, then my eyes move to the people and horses, then snow, waves and water, at the end the buildings at the back.

    3. Interpret
I can see a lively scene, plenty of men being busy, probably talking about ship being loaded. The 5 men are looking in the same direction and it makes you wonder, what’s over there. For me the most important part of the painting is the gigantic boat, as it’s just huge, you cannot miss it. The artist created this piece to capture the moment at the docks and some hardworking people and horses.
The art is not clear to me, there is a lot of smog, maybe this is at the times of World War II, or not long after.

    4. Decide
I like a lot about this art, mostly the ship and the water portrayed.
I think the artist did the best is to paint the people and horses and made the painting interesting, as there is a lot to look at.
I dislike the smog in the painting, as it’s not good for the environment.
If I were the artist, I would get rid off the smog and make the ship even longer.

    What do I see?
Group of men, small ships, passenger ship, big harbour
    White, grey, black, orange, brown
    Dark shades
    Rectangle, square
    In the harbour.
    STEP 2: ANALYSE
Explain how what you see is being used in the piece of art.
    Straight lines to highlight shapes.
    They help to show perspective.
From the people in the front of the picture till the buildings at the far end.
    STEP 3: INTERPRET
The author of the art wanted to show us a day in the harbour.
    Ask yourself:
People are waiting for the ship to moor in the docks.
    I am curious.
The ship is the most important.
He was fascinated with the view.
I would like to find more about work at harbour.
    STEP 4: DECIDE
No, because it is painted in dark colours.
    He introduced realistic picture.
I would like to use more bright colours.
