Writing:

On Friday, you completed some work on leaflets. Today, I would like you to complete some research about a topic of your choice.

Here are some suggestions:

– One of the continents

– One of the world’s oceans

– A country of your choice

– A sport of your choice

– An animal of your choice

– Coronavirus

– Mental Health

– Anything else that you would like to make a leaflet about.

Make sure you research plenty of information because tomorrow you will be turning that research into an information leaflet.

 

Maths:

Today, we will use the skills that we have learnt so far this week to remind ourselves how to compare and order fractions.

What can you remember?

Let’s start with 2 fractions:

1/ 4       and       2/3

How can we work out which is bigger?

Again, we need to make the denominators the same by using the rule ‘whatever we do to the bottom, we must do to the top’.

I know that 4 and 3 are not in the same times tables, so I am going to use the trick that I looked at yesterday and multiply them together.

I will start with ¼ x 3

1 x 3 = 3

4 x 3 = 12

So I have 3/12

Now I will do 2/3 x 4

2 x 4 = 8

3 x 4 = 12

So I have 8/12

Now my denominators are the same and I have

3/12         and      8/12

 

8/12 is the biggest, which means that 2/3 is the biggest.

One way I can show this is:

¼    <    2/ 3

What about when we have more than 2 fractions and we want to order them?

1/ 2,    1/5,     4/7

Again, we need to make the denominators the same, so I start by deciding what denominator I could use for all 3 fractions.

I have a 2, a 5 and a 7 and I know that all of these numbers have 70 in their times tables so that is what I will make all of their denominators, again using the rule ‘whatever I do to the bottom, I must do to the top’.

I will start with ½.

I need to change this to ?/70

2 x ? = 70. The answer is 35 so that is what I must multiply the top by.

1 x 35 = 35

I end up with 35/70

Next I will look at 1/5 and how I change this to ?/70

5 x ? = 70. The answer is 14 so that is what I must multiply the top by.

1 x 14 = 14

I end up with 14/70

Finally I will look at 4/7 and how to change this to ?/70

7 x ? = 70. The answer is 10 so that is what I must multiply the top by.

4 x 10 = 40

I end up with 40/70

 

Now I have 3 fractions all with the same denominators.

35/70       14/70       40/70

 

These are now easy to order:

14/70     35/70    40/70

 

The final thing that I must remember is to use the original fractions in my answer.

My final answer is:

1/5         ½     4/7
