Monday 11th May – Year 6

Good morning Year 6, I hope you had a good weekend.

Like me, some of you will have mixed feelings in the week that should have been our SATs week. Some of you will be very happy that you are not arriving at school this morning to do your SPaG test, some of you will be sad that you don’t get to show all of the learning that you have done and some of you will have mixed feelings and won’t have decided how you feel about it yet. All of the above are completely fine! To help this week, I am going to put a non-SATs activity on the end of each blog. Something that we may have done in school in the afternoons and some things that might celebrate the fact that we are not spending this week revising and forgetting how to spell our own names. If any of you want to talk about how you are feeling or ask any questions, just send me an e-mail and we can have a virtual, electronic chat.

Writing:

Last Tuesday, you were asked to look at the positive impact that the lockdown has had on nature and other environmental areas. Today, I would like you to write to the Government or someone else who holds power, and explain to them what changes we need to keep to ensure these positive impacts stay i.e. should we be allowing animals more freedom, do we need to spend more time with our families, should we be forced to use our cars less in order to keep levels of pollution down? What you write and who you write to is up to you but make it persuasive.

Maths:

This week, we are going to complete some maths puzzles, games and investigations. I hope you enjoy them.

Today, you have jumped ahead to the year 2050 and you have been asked to design the first ever theme park that will be built on the moon!!

Use the booklet below and follow each task to design your theme park.

theme_park

If you need some inspiration, why not look at the websites of existing theme parks.

https://www.altontowers.com/

https://www.draytonmanor.co.uk/

https://www.chessington.com/

In the comments box, tell me about the theme of your theme park.

Art:

Today I would like you to make a collage that represents nature – it could even be formed from nature. You could complete bark rubbings, collect leaves from your garden or use spare boxes to create texture.

Your picture could be an outdoor scene, a plant, a forest etc.

Here are some examples:

Non-SATs activity:

Complete a relaxing activity such as meditation or yoga to calm you at the start of this week.

Here are some videos to help you:

Extra task:

Take some time to enjoy your favourite music today.

Some ideas:

  • Listen to it
  • Talk about it
  • Write a new song in the same style
  • Learn to play it on an instrument
  • Draw your favourite singer/band a new album cover

    Dear Government,
My name is Amy Woods and I am writing to inform you about the positive impacts that lockdown is having and if there is a possibility that these stay after lockdown.

First of all, the positive things that are happening (due to this current situation) are things such as: we are able to spend more time with are families; there is less pollution because people are not travelling far distances; animals are free to roam around and lots more. The only downside is, is that when we come out of lockdown these things will become forgotten and will stop happening.

If you could come up with a rule that during a certain time cars or an transport are not to be used- only walking or to use a bike. You could also come up with a rule that animals- during a certain amount of time are aloud to roam around freely.

If there is a chance that these could become possible, it would help our country, animals and people out. It would help our country out majorly become less polluted and become more cleaner for everyone. Also, it would be a safer environment for people to live in too.

Thank you for your time and reading my letter.
    Yours sincerely,
    Amy Woods

    Dear Mr Johnson,
Being inside for this long is hard but it would be amazing if you permanently say no cars no public transport and we should isolate for atleast a week to se how we get if we do so it could help a lot. If you would consider doing so don’t do it all straight away do little steps at a time. Your sincerely Caiden Oleary Year 6

    Maths.
I have split my theme park into three separate parts, sea/underwater, space and safari. In each section there is 1 café, 2 vending machines, 1 major ride, 1 minor ride, 4 sets of toilets and in the first section a car park. In the last section, there is a shop at the bottom.

    Dear Government
I am writing to tell you that corona virus is helping our polluted planet I would like to ask when the corona virus is over for some of the rules stay to make our planet a better place.

It would be wonderful for all bus change to electric and that we can only use cars at certain times and to use more bikes and scooters .

This will make our world and country a much better place.

    Your sincerely

Whilst I was doing some Spanish work I noticed that the words Verdi and Azul come up and they mean green and blue in Spanish but they are also the name of your turtles.

Ha good spotting!! Yes they are named after a turtle reserve that I volunteered at in Costa Rica called Verdiazul meaning the green of the blue or the green of the sea. I split the name and gave them halve of it each.

    Dear Government,
I have some idea’s , that I would like to share with you! On how we could keep positive and aware of the unusual changes around us.

First, my name is Chanel and I am a year6 student, I have some brilliant idea’s for what people can do in quarantine/self-isolation, just like:
    -doing yoga
-spending quality time with your family
-doing nice things you have not tried before

    and many more.

    From Chanel x

    dear government,

i believe it would make a massive impact to the environment if you force shut the best leading car companies as there would be less car purchases and for when they re-open they have to produce either electric or half electric half fuel operated and also we should have a week ‘lock-down’ each year to celebrate the human sacrifices people made due to Covid-19
