Thursday 7th May 2020 – Reading Comprehension

Good morning Year 4,

As it is VE day on Friday. We thought today our comprehension would focus on this very significant event in History.

VE Day

 

Remember to answer questions in full sentences where possible.

  1. Which country surrendered in 1945?
  2. What day is VE Day celebrated in New Zealand?
  3. Read the section titled What led up to the First VE day? Why do you think a news bulletin interrupted normal programmes?

  6. Why do you think people were expecting Germany to surrender?
  7. What do you think ‘VJ Day’ is short for? Explain your reasoning.

We will not be blogging on Friday but the history task scheduled for tomorrow afternoon has plenty of ideas as to how you can celebrate VE Day.

    Because the German military had lost their leader and were weakened. Following this, German military surrendered on 8th of May.

    Church services, Street parties.

    6. Why do you think people were expecting Germany to surrender?
    Because German forces lost their leaders and their military were very weak.

    7. What do you think ‘VJ Day’ is short for? Explain your reasoning.
    Victory on Japan day because this day Japan surrendered.

    8. Summarise what life was like after VE Day.
    There was a peace in Europe but it was not the end of the war. As there was huge loss of life so the country was recovering and rebuilding slowly.

Although VE day meant peace it was not the end of the war.people were still sent to fight in Japan where the conflict continued until August in the Uk.Japan surrendered is marked by VE Day.Even after the war, continued to be a struggle in Britain.People were deeply affected.war was expensive so the country had to rebuild.

    2 ‘ newsealand celabreated VE Day onthe 9th of may due to the time diffrence
    3’It was bulletin inturupted to say the war is ended

    1) Japan surrendered in 1945.
    2) In New Zealand they celebrate this day on the 9th of May.
    3) It did because the war was over.
    4) Improvised.
    5) They hang up red, blue and white bunting and hold street parties.
    6) They thought that as the Nazi had lost their leader.
    7) VJ stands for Victory in Japan.
    8) We were still fighting in Japan and people suffered from depression as their loved ones had died.

    5. There were celebrations and fireworks were set off and bonfires were lit.
    6. I think it was because they were outnumbered.
    7. Victory against Japan because VE is Victory for Europe, so that must be Victory against Japan.
    8. I think it was relieving because there was no longer any war going on.

    6. They probably surrendered as their leader died.

    2. VE day is celebrated on the 9th of May in New Zealand due to time difference.
    3. German military lost their leader and their forces weakened. Germany’s surrender was expected and many people in Britain were waiting for the news. A news bulletin interrupted the normal programmes to paa this important message of the end of the war.

    5. People were celebrating VE day by dancing, organising parades, even bonfires and fireworks.
    6. German military lost their leader and their forces weakened.
    7. VJ stands for Victory in Japan, as VE means Victory in Europe.
    8. I believe it was hard fot people as they lost some of their friends and family members in the war. The war was very expensive for a lot of involved countries, which had to rebuild and recover, but it was peaceful finally.

    6. I think Germany surrendered because they had no choice but to surrender or die.

    7. VJ day is short for victory over Japan day because it is the day Japan surrendered in world war two.

    8. There was a big celebration after VE day and everybody who celebrated it was happy about world war being over and done with.

    3. I think the news was interrupted TV shows because it was very important news.
    4. Improvised means on the spot.
    5. 20,000 revellers went to Buckingham palace and they wore red,white and blue.
    6. Germany surrendered because the were very weak and the British were strong.
    7. I think it means Victory for Japan because they surrendered.
    8. VE Day was memorable day a GB (Great Britain) as they won the war and every body wore red,white and blue.
