Wednesday 29th April – Year 2 Home Learning Tasks

Happy Wednesday Year 2! Hope you are having a lovely week.

Here are your learning tasks for today.

English

This week we’ve looked at how Captain Tom has been supporting the NHS and at the work some of our nurses do. Today we are going to read a bit about how the people of the United Kingdom have been supporting the NHS. Have a read and answer the questions about the text.

Have you been clapping for carers? Have you shown your thanks in a different way? Do you think it is important and how does it make you feel to say thank you? Write a few sentences to share your thoughts. Remember to use your phonics for spellings, punctuation and to try to keep your handwriting neat.

Maths.

We are carrying on with our focus on 2D and 3D shapes this week. Can you solve the riddles to work out what shapes are being described? they’re all shapes we have looked at in class and they could be 2D or 3D shapes. Leave your answers in the comments on this post and we will post the answers tomorrow afternoon so you can check if you guessed right!

Common Exception Word Spellings.

These words are very important to help us make our writing sparkle. Instead of handwriting this week we are going to practice reading and spelling these as it is important we practice these.

Can you read these 12 words to whoever is helping with your learning.
Can you copy these words twice, having a good look at the spellings as you write them.
Can you now have a go at spelling the words. Get your helper to read the word to you so that you can spell it and see how many you can get right.

pretty           beautiful         after

fast               last                 past

father           class               grass

pass             plant              path

Phonics

It is important that we practice spelling phonetic sounds in all of the different ways they can be written. It helps us to read and write words that they are in several times so you should follow all the steps to help you practice.

We are going to focus on the sound ‘ie’ This is pronounced  ‘ie’ as in pie.
There are 5 different spellings of this sound. This sound can be spelt as:
igh as in night
ie as in pie
i- e (the spelling is split in the word) as in five
y as in my
i as in child

Can you read these words with the sound ‘ie’
light, tie, live, by, mild

Can you write the words below thinking about which spelling of the sound they have. Ask an adult to read the word for you to so you can try to spell it. Remember there is one word for each spelling of the sound so you can’t use the same spelling more than once.
sight, tile, drive, try, wild

Can you sort these words into the correct boxes? Look carefully at the spellings of the sound in each word. You might want to draw the table to help you.

Science.

Rainbows have become a sign of hope and support for all those people working hard for us. But do you know anything about rainbows? Read the slides below and find out some interesting facts about rainbows.

Can you answer these questions. Leave our answers on the comments in the blog.

How many colours are there in a rainbow?

What is the special name given to the shape of a rainbow?

What two types of weather do you need to have at the same time to make a rainbow in the sky?

Below is a very simple science experiment that you can complete if you wish. It shows how the colours all mix together in the white light. If you do not have card to do this on, it should work on paper but maybe not quite as well. If you make a spinner remember to email us a picture and then we can out them on the blog. We’d love to see!

Silly Story Time!

Can you find a silly story to read today? Perhaps you could wear something silly whilst you read it? Send us a picture of silly story time so we can share them with your friends on the blog.

Have a wonderful day and enjoy your learning! Remember to leave your comments on the blog or email your work to us so we know who to send certificates at the end of the week to.
