Real Leaders Training- Week 2

This was the second week of the Real Leaders training and the focus of this weeks session was communication. Communication is one of the key leadership skills our fifteen year 5 young leaders will need to learn and develop over the course of the programme.

Activity 1- What is communication?

For this activity the leaders were split into four different groups, and they were tasked with writing down what the word communication means and what it includes.’ There were some good ideas about what communication is:

  • It is when you speak to people’
  • ‘It is when you listen to people’
  • ‘It is when you explain something to someone’

After talking through our ideas as a group we came up with the following definition: ‘Communication is when a person listens and speaks to another person using their voice or body.’

Activity 2- Forms of Communication

This activity required the leaders to explore the different forms of communication we can use, using the three heading:

  • Dance: Dance is our physical actions and how we can use our body to communicate
  • Music: Music is our voice and how we can use our voice to communicate
  • Words: These are the words and phrases we use to communicate

Activity 3- How to use our voice

After discussing how we can use our voice in different ways, the leaders then had an opportunity to demonstrate how they can modify and project their voice across the hall. The leaders got themselves into pairs and stood facing each other from opposite ends of the halls. Half of the group would then tell their partner a piece of information while their partner listens (and then their partner would have a go). Firstly, the leaders had to use their normal voice and volume. Next the leaders had to use a whisper voice, followed by a shouting/ screaming voice. The idea of this activity is to demonstrate how we can change our voice and how this can affect how clear our speech is. We ended this activity by learning how to project our voices by talking from our chests/ stomach, relaxing our shoulders and opening their mouths wide we they speak.

Activity 4- Like Clockwork

After all of the theory work about communication was finished the leaders then had the opportunity use their communication skills in the game ‘Like Clockwork.’ This game started with the four groups passing a ball around their group in a set order as a they move around their area. When their number was called they had to move to the next group and continue to move ball around. The leaders were posed extra challenges such as, not being able to speak (to encourage the use of dance), only allowing one person to speak (to understand to people can communicate using different forms) etc.

  • How did you use Dance, Music and Words in the game ‘Like Clockwork’? Give examples for each of the three areas.
  • Which area of communication do you need to work on (Dance, Music or Words) and why?
  • What role on the bus will you take next week and why?

when we could not speak I communicated by using my hands to tell my group to move or pass me the ball. I need to improve my communication when we cannot speak to each other. I might try to be the engine because normally I am always leading the group I am in also I give a lot of ideas.

In the game clockwork we had to not speak and communicate by like doing clapping or hand signals
there was dance, music or words I think I need to work on words because I am not very good at saying phrases so in am going to work on that. I will be the headlight next week giving ideas and not taking the lead.

    Dance: Clap.
    Music: Humming.
Words: Over here! To me! Now this way!

We need to work on words as a lot of us were not very good at making noise and expressing what we were doing.

Next week I will try to go for the role of the conductor as I love working on my leadership skills and guiding the group through the activity.

In the activity clockwork we could not talk so for example we could clap, point, put thumbs up and many more. We had paper with dance, word and music on it and I think I need to work on music how I go loud and quiet at the right times. Next week I’ll try be the brake when the team is going too fast I’ll slow them down. 🙂

    1. Words can be: Compliment and explanation
music can be: Nice, come here, well done.
Dance can be: thumbs up, thumbs down, depressed.
    2. Words because we quite didn’t talk like giving a compliment.
    3. I might try to be a passenger because I would like to encourage other people and leaders so they can have a try.
