Tuesday 14th July 2020 – Writing Task

Good morning all,

As you did such a great job of writing art critique based on ‘Men on the Docks.’. We thought we would finish off the writing tasks with planning another critique based on the paiting below ‘The Hay Wain by John Constable.’

Take time to explore the painting:

Use the questions and headings below to plan your art critique. You can either hand write or use the questions to make notes on the comments for this blog.

Look:

1. Find one thing that shows us what time of year it is? Can you explain this?
2. What is happening in the foreground?
3. What is happening in the background?
4. What is happening on the left?
5. What is happening on the right?
6. What is on the horizon?
7. Do you like the painting? Why?
8. Would you like to be here? Why?
9. Put yourself in the picture. Where would you be? Why?

Analyse

1. What are the brush strokes like? E.g.Thick, broad, thin, detailed, short, shape, long, dabbed, dotted, swirled, layered, crossed
2. What lines can you see? What are they showing? What direction are they moving in?
3. What colours can you see? Do the colours link to the mood of the painting?
4. What shapes can you see?

Think

1. Who is the most important person in the painting? How can you tell this?
2. What period in time is the painting from? How do you know?
3. What/who are people looking at?
4. Why has the artist painted this?

Imagine

1. Use your imagination what do you think would happen next in this painting if it was a story?
2. What happened before this painting (imagine it is like a story)?
3. Where would you display this painting? Why?
4. Would you put it up in your house? Why?

    Look
Its summer or spring as Its sunny and the leaves are green.
In the foreground there is a horse carried cart driving through a flood.
In the background there is a house and a field and nothing is really happening.
On the left there is a running dog swaying trees and a brick house.
On the right side there is swaying grass an trees and a horse drawn wagon.
At the horizon there is nothing but swaying trees and fluffy clouds.
I do like the painting but could use some upgrades on the texture.
I would not like to be in that painting and the wind could be strong like tornado.
If I was in the picture I would be in the house for shelter.

    Analyse
The brush strokes are thin as he as put a lot of detail.
I can see wavy, detailed and strait lines in the picture.
I can see brown, blue, black and white and they do mix with the mood.
I can see wavy rectangles, circles, triangles and irregular shapes.

    Think
The most important person is the one who is driving as he knows were to go.
The time should be 1645 as the texture looks like it’s from that time.
The people could be looking at the flood and thinking what happened here.
The artist could of painted this to celebrate the end of the flood

    Imagine
The flood could evaporate and the streets will be back to normal.
It probably rained a lot and made the flood and before that it could have been peaceful.
I would hang it it a very special room to keep it safe.
If I had the money I would as it is very valuable.

    It is very sunny.
There is a man taking a cattle to a farm.
There are just trees in the background.
There are houses and trees swaying.
So there is a man and some cows at the right.
The horizon is a lot of trees.
Not really since it is not very adventures!
I would like some men and cows also a shopkeeper which sells equipment.
In the field because i could play football.

The brush stroke is at the side.
    House lines and cattle .
I can see black brown white and red that makes the mood very sad.
I can only see a rectangle
cat because it would be so boring without it.
Just after the dinosaurs because the buildings are made of oak wood.
What do you mean by that.
To see what happened in the past since most people did not know what there was back in the day.

The man gets famous since there it could be a special cow.
The guy is poor he had to beg for a job but luckily there was a kind lady which gave him a job.
In my loft because i do not like this painting!
NO because it does not suit me it is to boring and i am the opposite of boring i am ENERGETIC!!!!!

    Look:
1.You can tell what time of the year it is, because of the painting’s landscape and I think it’s around 1984 and it’s end of the summer.
2.Someone is doing their farming job.
3.There’s a dog and a house. I can see a picturesque river and trees, massive clouds and fields in the background.
4.The dog is observing and the house is standing.
5.Someone is doing their job. There is a hidden boat and a fisherman on the right.
6.There are clouds on the horizon and trees trying to gently nudge the horizon.
7.I like it because it has more nature than the other ones.
8.I like the painting, because I like farms,I like animals, nature and a little river.
9.I would be swimming, because I like swimming in lakes.
    Analyse
    1.I think short,thin,dotted and broad.
2.I can see the houses lines and the stuff and the rivers lines they are going diagonally and up to bottom.
3.I can see mostly green a little piece of blue another little piece of orange paint an the mood is happy and sad.
    4.Rectangle and circles.
    Think
1.The person in the wagon riding on the river because its the closes person in the painting and is the most visible.
2.1984 around that time because its the fashion typical for this period.
    3. The dog is looking at the people in the middle of the painting, the people on the wagon are looking at each other probably talking, one of them is pointing to the left side of the painting, which may suggest this is the way they’re going to go.
    4. The painter created his masterpiece to capture the village life and people’s everyday lives.
    Imagine
    1. What can happen next, I would think is that the dog would bark and would try to get closer to the people, the fisherman might catch a fish and the people in a cart would move further to the left.
    2. I believe what happened before was the men just arrived to this area and the dog came to greet them.
    3. I would display this painting in the gallery, if I have it at hope I would display it in the living room.
    4. I would definitely put this painting in my house as I like nature and it’s very pleasant painting.

    Look:
1.Find one thing that shows us what time of year it is? Can you explain this?
The trees tell us that it is Autumn because tree leaves make it is mild weather.

    2. What is happening in the foreground?
There is a cart which is travelling through the flooded street while a dog is watching this cart.

    3. What is happening in the background?
The stormy clouds are passing through the small village.

    4. What is happening on the left?
Some sticks and branches are falling on houses and the water is getting closer to the door steps.

    5. What is happening on the right?
The water level is rising and some people are getting ready to leave.

    6. What is on the horizon?
The bright weather going away and the dark weather coming.

    7. Do you like the painting? Why?
Yes because I like how accurate he is with the painting.

    8. Would you like to be here? Why?
No, because all the streets are flooded and its not safe to be there.

    9. Put yourself in the picture. Where would you be? Why?
In the house because there is caution of high winds for humans.

    Analyse
    1. What are the brush strokes like? E.g. Thick, broad, thin, detailed, short, shape, long, dabbed, dotted, swirled, layered, crossed
Dabbed because nothing can be straight in human kind.

    2. What lines can you see? What are they showing? What direction are they moving in?
Like little bit rough lines and they are showing like what is going to be happening in the time being. The directions are moving as the wind are since the clouds are taking over.

    3. What colours can you see? Do the colours link to the mood of the painting?
I can see various colours in the painting including green, blue, brown, white, black and red.

    4. What shapes can you see?
I can see cuboid- the cart, cube- the house, cone- the trees and a cylinder- huts.

    Think
    1. Who is the most important person in the painting? How can you tell this?
The person in the cart going down because it is important how he is going down.

    2. What period in time is the painting from? How do you know?
Before 2010 because in the 1900’s the weather would have been like that with no path for rain water to go anywhere.

    3. What/who are people looking at?
The mild weather because the storm is approaching.

    4. Why has the artist painted this?
Because he might remember him of his child hood since this is for his child hood.

    Imagine
    1. Use your imagination what do you think would happen next in this painting if it was a story?
The storm had come then some of the houses would had been destroyed

    2. What happened before this painting (imagine it is like a story)?
It seems like there was a storm which flooded all the roads and water everywhere.

    3. Where would you display this painting? Why?
In the living room, as the painting is full of nature and beautiful colours.

    4. Would you put it up in your house? Why?
Yes, I will as this photo show’s the beautiful nature.

There are a meadow and trees.
